I’m not exactly sure how I feel about this applicant, but we can be sure how the NY Times feels about his story and once again I feel betrayed by the “paper of record.”
ReplyDeleteThe article is entitled “Finding Debt a Bigger Hurdle Than Bar Exam.”
We don’t have all the facts and the Appellate Divisions order is terse. However, to be sure - it was his character not his “debt” which served to exclude him.
Perhaps I am picking nits, but as lawyers, we know that words we choose to uses are extremely important. Stating that this applicant’s “debt” was the barrier to his entry is simply incorrect. At best, it is editorial spin, and not a proper a characterization of the story. It’s similar to saying that if I drive 90 MPH down a crowed sidewalk, and the Bar excludes me from admission, it was my “driving ability” which excluded me.
Call me old fashioned, but I still believe that the role of the press in a free society is to give the electorate all the information they need to effectively govern themselves. Come on!! Get it right and leave it on the editorial page!!
PS – a jet ski is always a luxury item, and motorcycles are too… mostly…Ooops, I guess I do know how I feel. And thanks for the site Steph! Enjoy your weekend!
Hi Steve,
ReplyDeleteSorry to blow your Anon cover, : )
While I remain agnostic on the Times' journalism, I tend to wonder what this guy has done for the last forty some years ... not a single payment? Not even $ 10 and a note saying, "Sorry, but more soon,"? Too, as a female, I bristle that the article suggest he has been living off the women in his life (g/f and Mum).
Thanks for the comment >> you have a good weekend, too! *Happy*4th*
